Newt Gingrich: On the Proposed “Cordoba House” Mosque at Ground Zero

by Editors on July 21, 2010

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich just made a strong stand against the mosque:

There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia. The time for double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and submission is over.

The proposed “Cordoba House” overlooking the World Trade Center site – where a group of jihadists killed over 3000 Americans and destroyed one of our most famous landmarks – is a test of the timidity, passivity and historic ignorance of American elites. For example, most of them don’t understand that “Cordoba House” is a deliberately insulting term. It refers to Cordoba, Spain – the capital of Muslim conquerors who symbolized their victory over the Christian Spaniards by transforming a church there into the world’s third-largest mosque complex.

Today, some of the Mosque’s backers insist this term is being used to “symbolize interfaith cooperation” when, in fact, every Islamist in the world recognizes Cordoba as a symbol of Islamic conquest. It is a sign of their contempt for Americans and their confidence in our historic ignorance that they would deliberately insult us this way.

Those Islamists and their apologists who argue for “religious toleration” are arrogantly dishonest. They ignore the fact that more than 100 mosques already exist in New York City. Meanwhile, there are no churches or synagogues in all of Saudi Arabia. In fact no Christian or Jew can even enter Mecca.

And they lecture us about tolerance.

If the people behind the Cordoba House were serious about religious toleration, they would be imploring the Saudis, as fellow Muslims, to immediately open up Mecca to all and immediately announce their intention to allow non-Muslim houses of worship in the Kingdom. They should be asked by the news media if they would be willing to lead such a campaign.

We have not been able to rebuild the World Trade Center in nine years. Now we are being told a 13 story, $100 million megamosque will be built within a year overlooking the site of the most devastating surprise attack in American history.

Finally where is the money coming from? The people behind the Cordoba House refuse to reveal all their funding sources.

America is experiencing an Islamist cultural-political offensive designed to undermine and destroy our civilization. Sadly, too many of our elites are the willing apologists for those who would destroy them if they could.

No mosque.

No self deception.

No surrender.

The time to take a stand is now – at this site on this issue.

with the exception of rick lazio, no other politician has the courage to speak out against the mosque at our sacred ground. this also goes for our current mayor of nyc, who should be caring more for the relatives of the 9/11 victims.

Edward & Joan Higgins July 22, 2010 at 12:17 pm

NO MOSQUE, NO MOSQUE, NO MOSQUE!!!!!
Do not let our son and the 342 other firefighters, the police officers, the PA police and the civilians that lost their lives on 9/11 be humiliated by this Islamic act. If we let it happen it becomes a victory for the terrorist. We cannot let those who gave their lives to have died in vain.

My only words go out to the fellow strugglers, who feel worn down by the left. There is always a silver lining.

Seems our esteemed leaders will never learn. They failed to take the Islamic threat seriously for almost two decades as Islamists bombed US interests overseas and then on American soil (1993 WTC). We are not so much victims of Islam as victims of our own leaders who are either grossly uninformed or cowardly (which I suspect is it). Are they not witnessing the problems in Europe and taking instruction from there? This is just another area in which the American public, the average intelligent Joe, is way ahead of the elite. This situation in NYC is not about freedom of religion. Islam is as much or more a political ideology as a religion and to restrict where a mosque may or may not be built has nothing to do with freedom of religion. It is about security and and what is appropriate behavior. No one who is the least bit interested in promoting understanding between Americans and Islam would consider building a mosque near the site of 911. I pray for our politicians!

These vermin convert churches and cathedrals to mosques as a symbol of domination. If they can’t build a new one they will build over the top of an existing structure while eradicating all traces of the former religion.
The best example I can cite is the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (Constantinople) which was originally a Greek Orthodox cathedral in the Byzantine Empire which was Christian until the muslims invaded. (Google it) Typical history. This proposed mosques is a thinly veiled attempt to demonstrate victory over the Infidels and there should not even be any discussion about it. How long is it going to take for this country to learn?

R W Johnson July 23, 2010 at 12:54 am

If we had an American president, he could declare the entire site a historic landmark and the property could be taken over by eminent domain. End of story. If we had a real Ameican president and not an islamic operative in the White House.

Flo Chmiel July 23, 2010 at 7:54 am

Mayor Bloomberg is such a disgrace to the people of N.Y. and the United States. I expect this attitude from the White House since there is no love of this country from this administration. I hope the people who voted for hope and change are happy with the destruction of this great nation.

Harvey Blakeman July 23, 2010 at 1:43 pm

I commend all persons whose comments precede this one. I must say however that R W Johnson has scored the bullseye. Americans were riled by the leftists TV stations coupled with their wicked newspapers into a frenzy of hate for George W. Bush. The result? Hate clouded their ability to see clearly. As a consequence, despite Barack Obama’s clear history of sympathy for those who hate America and her people(20 years absorbing Jeremiah Wrong’s vitriol, Saul Alinsky’s teaching etc.) and his repeated threats to “fundamentally” change America, they voted him into power anyhow! What Americans have done is to put the deceiving, secretly avowed Muslim Barack Obama in the seat of power in the White House. We ARE OUT OF TIME. America, rise up and SWEEP EVERY DEMOCRAT out of office. If we fail, there will be NO AMERICA LEFT for us, our children or our grandchildren. Let this be our rallying cry “SWEEP THEM OUT!”

G-D Help America
It is worse than you think
Your commander in chief is an insurgent.
He is in place to assist in the Islamization of the USA.
You heard it here first.
Mark my words.
And pray for mercy.
All of G-Ds chosen people will assemble in Israel.
The West ?!!???

chris moyler July 25, 2010 at 2:04 am

The most clear, courageous, and to the point statement I have heard from a senior American politician in a very long time. Americans need to understand clearly that the Islamists present one face to them, but quite another to their own people. This is the Islamic doctrine of “taquiyya”- the deliberate deception of another in order to spread Islam, and it is an evil insidious poison. Let this be a rallying point for all America- Thus far and no further!!!

jeff weikel July 25, 2010 at 5:48 am

Is there noone in congress with a backbone? We need a warrior president now more than ever!

Denise Gillings July 25, 2010 at 2:24 pm

It’s about time the politicians listen to the people. They are saying no mosque. Obviously the people building this mosque have plenty of money , change locations. It’s seems these people are not interested in how this mosque is offending the American people (politicians excluded). Don’t let all the people who died on 9/11 be victimizes again

ted katz July 25, 2010 at 4:39 pm

finally-someone has the right voice -where were the media people to show the recent protests? good for you newt

Ben Pearlman July 25, 2010 at 8:22 pm

If we can’t get the politicians to listen to us then we are New Yorkers, but more so as proud Americans MUST commit to peacful protests at the site of the construction of the Cordoba House and STOP it’s construction. Even it it means arrest it may be necessary to preserve American values. If not this then when shal we as Americans stand up!?! When this contry becomes Muslim??? WAKE UP!

suarezjas 305 July 25, 2010 at 9:15 pm

Did not want to change? This is part of the change. If we continue with arms crossed, all end up covering ourselves the head.

J Perez July 26, 2010 at 9:16 am

I wish I could say what I really would do to the mosque and all the muslim people trying to build it, as well as every member of this administration. America has more enemies inside the country than enemies in the rest of the world. The mistake made by electing this muslim/ communist president, has to be fixed YESTERDAY.

Jane July 26, 2010 at 10:05 am

Unfortunately the only thing are politicians get angry about is a deduction in their salary and a decrease in their pension. We might as well change civil serving to self serving.

mitch c July 26, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Here it is in a nutshell:
We are all infidels.
Therefore, we are the enemy & must die.
Any questions?

cindy July 26, 2010 at 5:47 pm

This is not a tolerance issue. It will cause more angst, violence and intolerance than anything I can think of .
Stop it and think it through. A mosque can be built somewhere else.

Sid Gates July 26, 2010 at 8:30 pm

No Cordoba House in NY. My opinion

Robert Grossman July 27, 2010 at 1:44 pm

I guess if I go out and attach and destroy something, then I can go and build a shrine to myself. Sounds a little stupid to me.

Frank July 27, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Those of us who object to this sort of thing will eventually be called racist, which effectively closes any discussion. And let’s not just blame the politicians. When politicians listen to the American people today, they are listening largely to semi-literate, self-indulgent celebrity-worshipers who have lost most of the virtues necessary for freedom. The truth will make you free, but truth requires rigor and courage. Sic transit America.

Judy Bird July 27, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Wake up people we are losing our rights and freedoms under the guise of tolerance. These people are trying to take over American and put us under their Shariah law. These people are totally intolerant to us. We are the infidels they want to kill. Study the Koran and Shariah law do you want this America. Talk about no rights for women. Why would we want to let them build a mosque. It is a statement by them that they have conquered us. Don’t allow this mosque to be built, you are being disrespectful to all those who died in 9-11 if you allow this.

Gaby July 27, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Tolerance doesn’t mean “put your pants down”.

Judi July 31, 2010 at 3:57 pm

I am a United States Army Nurse and I am against a mosque being built at ground zero. I will never forget that morning I was working at my job and stood there in my patient’s room as I watched the horror of what was happening on the TV. I hope that every soldier will stand up against this. Thank you Newt for standing up and saying no.

Bobbie August 1, 2010 at 9:11 am

NO! NO! NO! This is a slap in the face to patriot Americans. What are our politicians thinking? I am usually passive about political things. But this is intolerable!

Carol Hestand August 2, 2010 at 6:04 pm

This would indeed be a sacrilege. A slap in the face to all those innocet people who lost their lives on 9/11 and to those they left behind. Let them build their Mosque in the middle east. Surely, New York city doesn’t need money that badly.

Ed P August 3, 2010 at 9:32 am

Islam is usually understood to mean peace, but really it means submission. And I believe the submission they are expecting is ours to their culture, not theirs to their god.

Omar B August 3, 2010 at 11:07 am

This article shows the hatred Mr. Gingrich has, not only for Muslims, but for anyone that does rally behind his thoughts. He talks about tolerance, yet displays the opposite of what he preaches.

I am an American Muslim, and despite my opposition to the Mosque, I still recognize the freedoms this country gave me when I migrated here more than 30 years agao, and I would not exchange it for the world.

As for asking me to ask the saudi govenment to allow Christians and Jews have their own places of worship in Saudi Arabia, is like Mr. Putin asking Mr Gingritch to allow communists have their own party in the US.

Omar B August 3, 2010 at 11:12 am

In the previous post I meant to say: “…anyone that does not rally behind his thoughts.”

Moderator, please make the correction…

pat August 4, 2010 at 4:02 pm

That’s an insult to all who died. NO WAY

Chris August 6, 2010 at 5:52 am

Ahh, my American cousins my sympathies are with you.

This is not about race or religion this is about money and power. Your government couldnt give a stuff what religion the American nation is as long as they can control it in the most effective manner and squeeze every last drop of money out of it for their personal gain.

Your rights and liberty have been taken away in order to protect you against ‘terrorism’. Your standing army has been shipped overseas to invade another country and fight a war in which the rules of engagement make it impossible to achieve any lasting success against an enemy that has no qualms about blowing up the civilian population or using them as human shields.

Here in the UK our police are out of control, we have an energy minister who doesn’t know one end of a battery from the other and a political system wherein the elected can steal from the public purse with impunity.

We are just the drones my friends, we are sheeple to be herded, used and disposed of at their will.

We have two choices: comply or not comply.

People here in the UK have tried the peaceful protest route, the legal route and all other non-violent routes and have been ignored.

Have you ever stood and felt that palpable silence as if the world stopped for a moment and then a sharp, constant wind begins to blow?

I feel a storm coming and people are going to have to decide whether to run for cover or get their hands wet.

Linda Vinal August 15, 2010 at 6:22 pm

I’ve listened to the freedom of religion arguments, but it is not respectful to the dead and their people and to us to do this. What if the Japanese wanted to build a Buddhist shrine at the Pearl Harbor memorial site where our ships still lay underwater? No, a thousand times no to this Cordoba mosque being built so close to where innocent Americans were murdered. Any place our people died is holy ground and our enemies’ religious buildings can be built elsewhere.

Denise August 15, 2010 at 11:39 pm

As an American, I am humiliated by our spineless politicians. They are an embarassment. Are they so consumed with their own image in the eyes of the gutless liberals that they cannot see that this is a slap in the face to ALL Americans. This is the home of the brave. Let’s start acting like it.

Doug August 16, 2010 at 11:23 am

I seems as though our “Leaders” are determined to give away our country to foreign interests in the name of “Political Correctness”. They are more interested in not offending others than protecting America, which is what they were elected to do. The solution is simple. If our current politicians are more interested in catering to outside interests then don’t re-elect them. THAT is our right, just like the freedom of religion that they are standing behind. Make your statement next time you VOTE. That is what the politicians should be afraid of, The AMERICAN PEOPLE.

C Lewis September 1, 2010 at 6:15 pm

It’s about time someone got a backbone. It is so inappropriate for a mosque to go at the Towers site and I am glad to hear someone stand up for what is right.

Pedro Foster September 21, 2010 at 1:13 pm

All over our Country, we have zoning laws against convicted offender from moving in in areas around schools and Churches in our cities. 19 member of Islam kill and traumatize and destroy New York citizen. they should have the right to vote if this mosque shall be build take it to the voting People they are the victims who will awaike daily to the view of this perverted mosque. God help us if they do some other barbarick conquest attent.
Thank you.
